# Slack

> Forward security alerts to a Slack channel using an incoming webhook

The Slack integration posts security alerts to a Slack channel through an incoming webhook. It is outbound only: OASM sends events to Slack, and never reads your Slack workspace.

## Prerequisites

* A Slack workspace where you can install apps. If your workspace restricts app installation, ask an admin to approve the OASM app first.
* Permission to create an app and add an incoming webhook.
* A channel to receive alerts.

## Create an incoming webhook

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the Slack app dashboard">
    Go to [api.slack.com/apps](https://api.slack.com/apps) and select **Create New App**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Create the app">
    Choose **From scratch**, enter a name such as `OASM Alerts`, select your workspace, and create the app.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enable incoming webhooks">
    In the sidebar, open **Incoming Webhooks** and turn the feature on.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add a webhook to your workspace">
    Select **Add New Webhook to Workspace**, choose the channel that should receive alerts, and allow access.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Copy the webhook URL">
    Copy the generated URL. It starts with `https://hooks.slack.com/services/`.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Warning>
  Treat the webhook URL as a credential. Anyone who has it can post to the channel. If it leaks, delete the webhook in Slack and connect a new one.
</Warning>

## Connect Slack

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the Applications tab">
    In the console sidebar, open **Integrations** and select the **Applications** tab.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Open Slack">
    Select the **Slack** card.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enter a name and webhook URL">
    Enter an **Integration name**, then paste the **Webhook URL** from Slack.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set a bot username (optional)">
    Enter a **Bot Username** to control how the sender appears in Slack. If you leave it blank, Slack uses the name set on the webhook.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose events">
    Use the **Event** and **Severity** switches to control what OASM sends. See [What notification integrations send](/integrations/overview#what-notification-integrations-send).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Connect">
    Select **Connect**. OASM posts a welcome message to confirm the webhook works.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Test

Open the integration in the **Connected** tab and select **Test Integration**. A test message appears in the Slack channel. If nothing arrives, confirm the webhook is still active in Slack and that the channel still exists.
